TikTok is introducing a new feature that enables them to lessen the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their streams. This move comes as the platform revealed that it currently hosts more than 1 billion AI videos.
Trial and Implementation
The new functionality is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a global release. This shift aligns with a rise in AI-generated material, spurred by emerging video-generation tools.
The Broader AI Trend
It has been noted that almost 10% of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently illogical or surreal.
“We know from our community that many people enjoy content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to offer the community the option to see more or less of that, according to their own choices,” commented a platform representative.
AI on the Platform
TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network labeled as AI-generated. Overall, over 100 mn videos are submitted to the service daily, making AI-generated material a minor part of its overall inventory.
How to Adjust Settings
Members will be able to limit or boost the volume of AI-generated videos they see by using the “manage topic” option in the app and picking AI-made media. Other topics that can already be controlled under the setting include current affairs, style, aesthetics, and dance.
Platform Guidelines
TikTok’s rules mandate users to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids harmful fake videos of celebrities or crisis events. Any believable AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its community policies.
Furthermore, the service will from now on add an “AI-made” label to content produced via its built-in AI features, or flagged by an cross-platform project for recognizing AI-generated material. This step is intended to help prevent users from seeking to evade the labeling process.
Responsible AI Funding
TikTok is also introducing a two million dollar educational fund for specialists and institutions to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit charitable organizations focused on teaching computer science.
Moderation Strategy
The platform has supported its content review process, during discussion over proposals to make redundant numerous review team members in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to eliminate a significant number of roles in its content moderation department in the UK capital, with trade unions and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.
A trust and safety lead stated that human moderation would remain essential, but automated tools can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok reported a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the last 12 months due to intervention by its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us process content quickly.”
