RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
